New Antonine Wall trail welcomed

Bo’net has welcomed the creation of a new walking trail along the Roman Antonine Wall – which runs from Bo’ness to Old Kilpatrick.

Bo’net Secretary Adrian Mahoney said: “Anything that encourages people to visit our area, and spend money in our local economy, has to be a good thing.

“Although the Antonine Wall was built primarily of turf and has disappeared in many areas – there are still great things to see and do right along the line of the Wall: from our great Roman replica at Bridgeness to our museum and fortlet at Kinneil. We’re proud of our Roman roots.

“We recently put a guide to exploring the Wall on the Bo’net website. We’ve also linked to the new trail web page and other resources. We’ve also been promoting our Roman history to communities on Hadrian’s Wall.

“Just visit http://www.bonet.org.uk and click the link on our homepage for all the useful information.”

The new walking trail is also accessible from the official Antonine Wall site at http://www.antoninewall.org

Adrian added: “Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for a new adventure, the Antonine Wall trail offers a chance to connect with the past and see how the Roman Empire’s influence shaped the landscape of Scotland.”

Currently, the walking trail is only in digital format, with walking guidance online. Maps can also be downloaded to phones.

However, there are hopes that physical signage can be installed right along the Antonine Wall to encourage walkers to better explore the Roman frontier.
